The Right of Public Access
The common right
(Allemansrätten) in Sweden
The right of public access is an old right in Sweden. It is almost unique and it allows us to roam about freely in woods and over fields and meadows, go swimming and boating on lakes and waterways.
But the right of public access also involves responsibilities. It requires us to show care and consideration.
You are not entitled to cross or stay on private land without permission.
Use the conveniences and garbage cans on the campsite.
Respect the frequent ban on making fires during summer.
You should preferably spend the night on a designated campsite, where you will find a fireplace, a waste bin and conveniences.
Certain places with particulary sensitive bird life are protected as bird sanctuaries. There it is forbidden to go ashore or come too close. (The middle of lake Marviken and the mountain Klövberget in lake Klämmingen).
Do you want further information about the right of public access - call Naturvårdsverket (the National Environment Protection Board) phone.nr 08/ 698 10 00.
